Recovering from Homelessness: Bryant & Bianca’s Story

Leading Families Home • Sep 28, 2020

It’s an unfortunate negative – and false – perception that most homeless people are addicted to drugs or alcohol. Most are not.

But some do struggle with addiction, and they deserve the same respect and support as everyone else.

Meet Bryant and Bianca, a couple referred to Leading Families Home. Bryant and Bianca were both in recovery from drug addiction and had previously been sheltered at Family House, another Toledo-area emergency shelter for the homeless.

During our intake assessment of Bryant and Bianca, we discovered that they both had outstanding warrants. Our policy prohibits Leading Families Home from housing Participants with open warrants. We immediately alerted Bryant and Bianca of their open warrants, so that they could clear them – which is exactly what they did as soon as their warrants were brought to their attention.

The couple, who has children that they do not have custody of, were very motivated to become housed. They worked tirelessly to overcome any challenges that stood in the way of securing a new home.

Thankfully, Bryant and Bianca were able to find housing within one month. They now live in a one-bedroom apartment in the local area. This is a huge step for them. Not only does it give them safety and security, having a permanent home also enables them to more easily continue with their treatment and stay in recovery.

Bryant and Bianca desperately want to gain custody of their children within the year. When their current lease is up, Leading Families Home will assist them with finding a larger unit to house their entire family, including their children, once they gain custody.

Bianca is beyond grateful for the support of LFH. Bianca notes, “Leading Families Home has given me a solid foundation to better myself and my family. It has brought us together as a family and given us a chance to build and succeed in life. It really has given us the help we truly needed, and we are truly blessed.”

The LFH Case Manager assigned to Bryant and Bianca is so proud of her clients! She says, “They are great to work with. When I reach out to them, they always respond immediately. I really enjoy seeing them progress so far in the program. At their lease signing, Bianca gave me a hug to thank me for helping. It really meant a lot to me and made my day.”
